How to Teach Patterns and Linear Functions

Recognizing Patterns and Linear Functions

Recognizing patterns is an everyday skill. We see them everywhere. Patterns and Linear Functions are the most common and easiest to recognize.

Visual Aids

The more visual aids you can use to show what makes graphs turn out linear the faster your students will realize that every number in a linear T-chart follows a pattern. I like to pair this lesson with some things they know about scatter plots. I like to use scatter plots to show an extreme example of data that doesn't follow a pattern but does show trending date.

Trending Data

Your students know the word "trending" very well from social media. This will give them an ah ha moment where they can start to connect the dots.

After they understand how to read a scatter plot to predict future outcomes showing them Patterns and Linear Functions (where things are consistent) will be a walk in the park!
